Soccer’s Rutledge Named LSWA Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU midfielder Malorie Rutledge and Louisiana-Monroe goalkeeper Mallory George have been named this week’s LSWA Soccer Player and Goalkeeper of the Week for their outstanding performance on the pitch this past weekend.

Rutledge has earned her first career LSWA Soccer Player of the Week selection after leading the nationally-ranked Tigers to a 2-1 win over division rival Alabama on Sunday afternoon.

Rutledge assisted on LSU’s first goal of the match as she hit sophomore Rachel Yepez in stride in the box with a perfect volley over the Alabama defense from the midfield line to put the Tigers on top 1-0 less than five minutes into the match. She ranks second in the Southeastern Conference with nine assists through 15 matches this season.

The sophomore from Sharpsburg, Ga., added the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 14th minute of play to make her the team’s second-leading scorer with four goals and 17 points on the year. Rutledge has converted both of her penalty kick opportunities this season.

George was equally as impressive in goal for the Warhawks as she posted back-to-back shutouts with a 0-0 draw against Florida International and a 1-0 shutout of Florida Atlantic.

George played all 200 minutes between the posts for the Warhawks as she finished the weekend with a total of 13 saves. This gives the sophomore from Centennial, Colo., five shutouts on the season and moves her into sole possession of second place on the school’s all-time list.

She also became just the third player in program history to surpass the 3,000-minute mark for her ULM career. George has been steady for the Warhawks over the last five games as she boasts an impressive 0.57 goals against average and has saved 28 of 31 shots for a .903 save percentage against opponents from the Sun Belt Conference.
