LAS VEGAS — The LSU women’s tennis team experienced mixed results on the first day of the UNLV Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.
The Lady Tigers started off strong by sweeping all three doubles matches in the early afternoon.
The duo of Mykala Hedberg and Tiffany Tucker defeated Thalia Barriga and Marta Marcinkowska of Tulsa, 8-5. Ashley Murdock and Nicole Kantor knocked off Orsi Golovics and Edit Suhadjda of Northern Arizona, 8-4. Staten Spencer and Kylie Adamek beat Yumi Hasegawa and Paij Porter of Northern Arizona, 8-4.
“I thought it was a good day,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “I was really pleased with how we came out in doubles, but we were a little rusty in singles. Mykala played really solidly today, so overall I thought it was a good day.”
In singles, Hedberg showed no signs of rust as she dominated her match with Kim Van Ginkel of Northern Arizona, 6-3, 6-1.
Tucker was also victorious on the day, as she won a tough three set match against Agostino Santoro of Tulsa 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In that same flight Murdock fell in three sets to Nikol Dimitrova of UNLV who was playing on her home courts, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
Flight 3 was tough on the Lady Tigers as both Adamek and Sloane Mathis lost in straight sets. Both will now compete on the consolation side of the bracket.
One blow to the team came when Kantor injured her right foot in singles play. The injury forced Kantor to retire while she was trailing 2-1 to Thalia Barriga of Tulsa.
All three LSU doubles teams will play for each flight’s championship tomorrow. Action will begin at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at noon CDT.
