BATON ROUGE — After winning the Mizuno Tiger Classic last weekend to open the 2007 season, the LSU volleyball team moved up one spot in the AVCA/CSTV Coaches poll to No. 22, it was announced on Monday.
The No. 22 national ranking marks the 16th consecutive week the Tigers have been among the Top 25, the longest streak since being ranked for 52 straight weeks from 1989 through 1993. Last week, LSU swept New Orleans and UL-Monroe before holding off a spunky Saint Louis team, 3-2, to claim the tournament title.
Florida remains the highest ranked team in the Southeastern Conference, remaining at No. 7 this week after going 2-0 last weekend. Following the Tigers at No. 22, three more conference teams are receiving votes in the poll. Tennessee comes in at 29th, followed by Arkansas at 37th and Ole Miss at No. 40.
For the season, the Tigers’ only ranked opponent remains Florida. In addition to Tennessee, Arkansas and Ole Miss, LSU is scheduled to face Notre Dame, which is also among the programs receiving votes. The Tigers will take on the Fighting Irish in a non-conference match at home on Oct. 23.
This weekend, LSU will take to the road for the first of four consecutive road trips. The Tigers will participate in the Mizuno Invitational II in Houston. LSU beings play against Illinois on Friday at 10:30 p.m., before closing out the tournament on Saturday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. and tournament host Rice at 7 p.m.
Rice went 1-2 last weekend, as it hosted the Mizuno Invitational I, knocking off eventual tournament champion Lamar, 3-2, but falling to Louisiana Tech, 3-1, and Oral Roberts, 3-2. Illinois went 2-1 in the Dayton Flyer Invitational last week, defeating Bowling Green, 3-1, and IPFW, 3-0, before falling to Dayton in five games. After falling to Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi bounced back to defeat Prairie View A&M and Centenary to start the year at 2-1.
