BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team held its first full-length scrimmage of fall camp Sunday, and junior Roslyn Jones and sophomore Katherine Lagow each tallied goals to lead the black team to a 2-0 shutout of the grey team at the LSU Soccer Complex.
The sides remained scoreless early in the second half when Jones put the black team on top in the 54th minute by following a blast off the crossbar by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Lum with a header into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box.
Lagow added the team’s second goal of the evening with just 22 seconds remaining on the clock as she took a pass from fellow sophomore midfielder Malorie Rutledge near the top of the penalty area and fired a bullet into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
Jones led the offensive attack for the black team as she finished the match with four shots and three shots on goal. The black team held the advantage on the offensive end as it outshot the grey team by the count of 18-6 and finished the match with seven shots on goal and five corner kicks.
“It was important for us to come out and work on our game fitness and play a very technical game to get us ready for the opener,” Jones said. “We worked really well off the ball and made some great runs tonight. We’ve worked hard the entire preseason to get ready for this week, and I think we showed great progress tonight.”
Veteran goalkeepers Valerie Vogler and Jackie Moseley combined for the shutout as each only needed to save one shot by the grey in their 45 minutes of work. Vogler also made a pair of saves after switching sides in the second half as she held the black team scoreless for more than 30 minutes in the final period.
LSU head coach Brian Lee said he was pleased with effort and communication by his team in Sunday’s scrimmage and agreed with Jones that his squad took an important step forward as it enters its final week of preparation for the season opener on Friday.
“The girls came out tonight and enjoyed a competitive scrimmage,” Lee said. “I thought our attacking combinations were outstanding and we communicated really well. There are still some things we need to clean up, but we took a giant step forward in our preparation for the opener.”
The Tigers kick off the 2007 season at home this weekend as they play host to the LSU Classic with matches scheduled against Southern Miss on Friday at 7 p.m. and its first ever match against in-state rival Louisiana Tech on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Their match against the Lady Techsters is scheduled for a live TV broadcast by Cox Sports Television.
