Rotz Misses US Amateur Cut by One Stroke

SAN FRANCISCO — LSU’s Clayton Rotz fell just short of earning a spot in the match play competition at the 107th United States Amateur Championship on Wednesday as he missed the cut by a single shot in the 36-hole stroke play qualifier at The Olympic Club.

Rotz followed his 4-over 74 in Monday’s opening round at The Lakeside Course with a matching 4-over 74 at The Ocean Course in a second round that was suspended Tuesday due to darkness.

The native of Chambersburg, Pa., finished just one stroke off the cut line in a tie for 76th place as he carded a 36-hole score of 8-over 140. The field of 312 golfers was cut to the lowest 64 scorers who advanced to the match play portion of the competition that kicked off Wednesday.

All matches will be held at The Lakeside Course as the second and third rounds are scheduled for Thursday with the quarterfinals slated for Friday and the semifinals continuing on Saturday. All matches at the U.S. Amateur are scheduled for 18 holes except the 36-hole championship match, which will be held at The Lakeside Course on Sunday.

Rotz is part of a stellar class of incoming freshman as he joins fellow prep standouts Andrew Loupe of Baton Rouge and John Peterson of Fort Worth, Texas, who hope to make their LSU debut when the season kicks off on Sept. 10 at the Scenic City Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn.
