Men’s Golf Freshman Rotz Set for US Amateur

BATON ROUGE ? Before making his collegiate debut with the LSU men’s golf team next month, freshman Clayton Rotz will compete in the nation’s premier amateur championship as he tees off in the 107th United States Amateur Championship on Monday.

This year’s championship will be held through Aug. 26 at The Olympic Club’s Lakeside Course and Ocean Course in San Francisco as the 36-hole stroke play competition begins Monday.

Rotz is scheduled to tee off from the first tee of the Lakeside Course at 10 a.m. CDT on Monday followed by the beginning of his second round from the 10th tee of the Ocean Course on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Live scoring of the event can be found online at www.usamateur.org.

Following two days of stroke play, the field of 312 will be cut to the lowest 64 scorers who will advance to the first round of the match play portion of the competition on Wednesday at The Lakeside Course. The second and third rounds follow Thursday with the quarterfinals scheduled for Friday and the semifinals continuing on Saturday.

All matches at the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship are scheduled for 18 holes except the 36-hole championship match, which will be held at The Lakeside Course on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Rotz, a native of Chambersburg, Pa., earned an automatic berth into the U.S. Amateur by firing a 36-hole score of 4-under 140 to take home medalist honors at the sectional qualifier at Blue Ridge Country Club in Harrisburg, Pa., near his hometown.

Rotz is currently the nation’s 37th-ranked junior golfer in the latest Polo Golf Rankings as he boasts an impressive stroke average of 71.1 in tournament competition this summer. He followed a fifth-place finish at the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament of Champions with a runner-up finish at the 90th Western Junior Championship in June.
