Football Completes Two-a-Days; Ready for Scrimmage

BATON ROUGE — LSU officially held its final two-a-day practice session of preseason camp on Friday as the Tigers went through a pair of workouts here at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.

LSU will scrimmage for the third and final time on Saturday afternoon in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers are expected to use Saturday’s scrimmage to focus on certain situations as well as work on special teams. The Tigers will also use Saturday to go through their pre-game routine, which includes how they enter the field and their pre-game warm ups and drills.

On Friday, the Tigers worked out in full pads during the morning followed by an afternoon session in shorts and shoulder pads. Friday’s second practice was held indoors as the Tigers continue to try to beat the heat by working out inside for the afternoon session on days when there are two practices.

“I liked today’s practice,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “I like the speed of this team, and the speed of practice was really good today.  This was our last day of two-a-days and it came to a close very quickly. I like the approach the team has taken during camp and the way we have prepared.

“We did some things today that we had to do.  Today’s second practice was in shells, so it wasn’t live tackling, but it was fast-paced and we got a lot done.”

Friday’s afternoon session again had the Tigers focusing on all phases of the game, including a period dedicated to the two-minute drill, which pleased the head coach. Miles said quarterback Matt Flynn capped the two-minute drill with the first offense by throwing a touchdown pass to end a 10-play scoring drive.

“We had one of the best two-minute drills that I’ve seen us run,” Miles said of Flynn’s directing of the offense during that drill.

Miles said Flynn threw the ball well on Friday and showed no signs of the arm fatigue that limited the senior in certain drills earlier in the week.

“We held him out earlier this week as just a precautionary move,” Miles said of Flynn. “He threw the ball well today and he’ll scrimmage tomorrow.”

Miles said the coaching staff will use Saturday’s final scrimmage as another evaluation opportunity as they continue to look for those players who will be ready to help the Tigers once the season starts.

“There will be some impressions made during the scrimmage,” Miles said. “We are trying to get the players in the right spots and evaluate where they are and how they can help us.”
