Men’s Golf Signee Rotz Qualifies for US Amateur

BATON ROUGE — LSU men’s golf signee Clayton Rotz punched his ticket to the 107th United States Amateur Championship on Monday by winning medalist honors in the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at Blue Ridge Country Club in Harrisburg, Pa.

Rotz, a native of Chambersburg, Pa., fired back-to-back rounds of 2-under par 70 to finish two strokes clear of the rest of the field at 4-under 140. The sectional qualifier at Blue Ridge Country Club awarded three golfers the chance to compete in the nation’s premier amateur championship.

Rotz, who is currently the 37th-ranked junior golfer in the country in the Polo Golf Rankings, has enjoyed an outstanding summer as he prepares for his freshman season with the Tigers this fall.

He preceded his impressive runner-up finish at the prestigious 90th Western Junior Championship in June by tying for fifth place at the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament of Champions two weeks prior in Johnstown, Pa., near his hometown of Chambersburg.

The Western Junior Championship was officially founded by the Western Golf Association in 1914 as the first national junior championship in the country, while the Sunnehanna Amateur is one of the nation’s top amateur tournaments as only the U.S. Amateur awards more U.S. Walker Cup points than the Sunnehanna Amateur.

The 107th U.S. Amateur Championship will be held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco from Aug. 20-26. The course has played host to four U.S. Open Championships in its illustrious history with two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen winning the most recent tournament in 1998.
