BATON ROUGE — Former LSU linebacker Dave Peterson, who was a member of the Tigers’ 2003 BCS National Championship team, was killed on Tuesday morning after the motorcycle he was riding on crashed into a sports utility vehicle.
Peterson is the second member of LSU’s 2003 national title team to die tragically this summer. Former Tiger and New England Patriot Marquise Hill drowned in Lake Ponchartrain back in late May.
Peterson signed with the Tigers in the spring of 2001, coming to LSU from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. A native of Bristol, Fla., Peterson played in six games during LSU’s 2001 Southeastern Conference championship season, recording one tackle.
Peterson sat out the 2002 season before returning to the squad during the 2003 national championship season. In 2003, Peterson saw action in eight games, recording six tackles, 2.5 tackles for losses and one sack.
His best outing with the Tigers came in a road win over Arizona in 2003 as he picked up two tackles, including 1.5 tackles for losses in the 59-13 victory over the Wildcats. Peterson’s sack came during LSU’s 41-6 victory over Mississippi State in 2003.
For his career, he played in 20 games and finished with seven tackles and one sack for the Tigers.
Funeral arrangements for Peterson have yet to be determined.
