Two Women’s Golfers Advance at Southern Amateur

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Two members of the LSU women’s golf team advanced through the first round to the round of 16 Tuesday in the 2007 Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship being played at the Riverchase Country Club.

Seniors Kim Meck of Austin, Texas and Alexis Rather of Tupelo, Miss., both advanced through the opening round and will compete on Wednesday.

Meck took down Abigale Schepperle, a Birmingham native who plays for Auburn, 4 and 2, while Rather needed 20 holes to get the win over Corrie Tayman.

LSU’s redshirt freshman qualifier Nicole Crochet fell in her opening round match, 1 up, to Laura Coble.

Rather will have the difficult task of trying to stop NCAA Champion and last year’s WSGA runnerup, Stacy Lewis of the University of Arkansas. Lewis won her opening match against Mina Hardin, 6 and 5. Meck will meet Sarah Sturm, a one up winner in her first match.
