Softball’s Roessner, Turner Honored by LSWA

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Emily Turner was named the Louisiana Pitcher of the Week, while LSU’s Killian Roessner and McNeese State’s Brooke Brodhead shared Louisiana Hitter of the Week honors, it was announced by the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association on Tuesday.

A senior All-American from Chula Vista, Calif., Turner went 2-0 on the week with a save. The right-handed pitcher threw her first collegiate no-hitter against Arkansas on Saturday. The seven inning no-no was the first for the Tigers in conference play since Britni Sneed no-hit Ole Miss in 2002.

In the series finale against the Lady Razorbacks, Turner came on in relief in the sixth inning and earned her first save of the season. In two innings of work, she did not allow a hit, bringing her weekend total to nine no-hit innings. In her first appearance of the week, she threw started and threw three innings against Southern on Wednesday. She allowed just two hits in that outing.

For the week, she did not allow a single base runner to reach third base against her as only two opponents advanced into scoring position. Opponents were held to a .053 batting average against her as Turner improved to 15-5 on the season.

Brodhead was 8-for-19 at the plate for the Cowgirls on the week for a .421 average. The junior from Lafayette helped McNeese state move up in the Southland Conference standings with two SLC series victories. Brodhead recorded a pair of home runs and four RBIs, while scoring three runs.

In the series opener against Nicholls State, she recorded her 10th home run of the season. She had her hitting streak extended to 12 games on the week before going hitless in the second contest against the Lady Colonels. The second baseman finished the week with four multiple-hit games, two walks and a sacrifice fly.

Roessner led LSU with an 8-for-12 performance last week to give her a team-best .667 batting average. The junior from Manasquan, N.J., recorded hits in seven straight plate appearances beginning against Southern last Wednesday and extending through the second game against Arkansas last Saturday.

In the first game against the Lady Razorbacks, Roessner tied her career high for hits in a game with a 4-for-4 performance including an RBI and a run scored. In the second game against Arkansas, she recorded just her second career steal in a swipe of home as part of two runs scored with a double in the game.

This marks the first Louisiana Pitcher of the Week honor for Turner and the first Louisiana Hitter of the Week honor for Roessner this season. Brodhead has earned Louisiana Hitter of the Week honors once previously to give her two awards for the year.
