Gymnastics Draws NCAA Evening Session, Starts on Bars

BATON ROUGE — The LSU gymnastics team learned that it will compete in the evening session and start competition on the uneven bars at next week’s NCAA Championships as the NCAA released the complete session and rotation assignments today.

The Tigers will face Denver, Michigan, Stanford, UCLA and host, Utah, in the second of two preliminary round sessions that is scheduled to get underway at 8 p.m. (CT) from Utah’s Huntsman Center on Thursday, April 26.

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oregon State will compete in the first preliminary round session what will begin at 2 p.m. that same day.

The top-three teams from each session will advance to the Super Six competition on Friday.

In addition, individuals will also qualify for Saturday’s Individual Event Finals from Thursday’s preliminary rounds.

“There is so much parity between the 12 teams that have qualified that I don’t think it matters what session you are in,” said LSU head coach D-D Breaux.

“I think that competing with Utah in the evening session we’ll see a huge pro-Utah crowd that will provide a great atmosphere to compete in,” added Breaux. “But the way I see it, we’re with four teams (Michigan, Stanford, UCLA and Utah) that have all been to the Super Six. We still have something to prove.”

The Tigers will have to prove themselves against some of the nation’s perennial national championship contenders. Utah has won a NCAA-leading 10 national titles, while UCLA has five to its credit. Michigan and Stanford have never won a NCAA title, but both boost numerous Super Six appearances. LSU and Denver will both be chasing their first.

The Tigers will do so with an advantageous rotation order as they begin competition on the bars.

The rotation order is a familiar one for the Tigers who drew the same order at both this year’s SEC and NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.

“I still believe that this is a rotation that works in our favor,” said Breaux. “We finish with our two strongest events so if we can start with solid performances on bars and beam we have the potential to have a very good meet.”
