BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team added two wins to their record defeating No. 61 Marshall, 6-1, and Prairie View A&M, 7-0, in their final home appearance this season at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium on Thursday.
The Lady Tigers (15-7, 5-5 Southeastern Conference) swept doubles play and only lost one singles match during the two matches.
“We came out and we have been playing some very solid tennis. Marshall has had a very solid year and we came out and took care of them,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “I was very pleased with the attitude and the effort.”
Against Marshall, The Lady Tigers swept doubles play for the tenth time this season. No. 42 Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg finished first on court one defeating Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor, 8-3.
Nicole Kantor and Staten Spencer secured the point for LSU on court three as they defeated Lynzee Kever and Thaddea Lock, 8-3. Hannah Robinson and Anastasiya Dubova grabbed the sweep on court two against Yulia Kashelkina and Jessica Keener, 8-5.
In singles play, Falcon went up 3-0 when her opponent, Schmitt, was forced to retire due to injury giving LSU its second point. This puts Falcon’s record at 30-2, 20-0 in the No. 1 slot in dual play.
Kantor put LSU up 3-0 blanking the Thundering Herd’s Kashelkina on court three. She owns a .500 mark in the No. 3 slot in dual play.
“She has really stepped up her game a lot in singles and doubles,” Minnis commented on Kantor.
Robinson secured the win on court four defeating Kever in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Her record improves to 23-9, 8-2 in the No. 4 slot.
Spencer blanked her opponent, Lock, on court five putting LSU up 5-0. Spencer improves to 15-14, and is undefeated, 8-0, in the No. 5 slot in dual play.
“Staten (Spencer) looks like she has confidence back and she is playing much better,” Minnis said.
Dubova improved her overall record to 16-6 with a win against Keener in the No. 6 slot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Hedberg battled on court two with Marshall’s Soor. After losing the first set by an 8-6 tiebreaker decision, Hedberg dominated the second set winning it 6-2. She could not keep momentum up as she fell in a third set super tiebreaker, 11-9.
The Lady Tigers took a short break, and then prepared to take on Prairie View A & M in their final home match of the season.
LSU added another doubles sweep putting them at eleven for the season. Dubova and Robinson blanked their opponents on court two. Falcon and Hedberg followed with the same results.
On court three, freshman Ashley Murdock and junior Tiffany Tucker completed the sweep winning the match 8-1.
The Lady Tigers continued dominating to sweep singles play as well.
Murdock, Spencer and Robinson blanked their opponents on courts four, three and two, respectively, putting the Lady Tigers up 5-0.
Tucker finished next on court five defeating Margaret Banks in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Kantor and Mathis finished the sweep for LSU winning matches on courts one and six, respectively, both in straight sets.
Up next, the Lady Tigers will travel to face Arkansas in their final match of the season on Saturday at noon CT.
