AUBURN, Ala. — The LSU women’s tennis team looks for its fifth Southeastern Conference win when it travels to face No. 36 Auburn on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT at Luther Young Tennis Complex.
The match has been moved back from its original time of 11 a.m. due to expected cold weather.
The Lady Tigers (12-7, 4-5 SEC) won their last four contests, three against SEC opponents, and are hoping to continue the streak on the road against the Auburn Tigers.
“This is a big match. We have a lot of momentum and we need to keep it up,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We need to play as hard as we can in doubles.”
After three straight conference losses, the Auburn Tigers managed to grab a win in a 5-2 decision over Arkansas on Friday. The Tigers are 10-7 overall, 4-5 in the SEC.
Auburn is 4-3 in matches at home this year, while LSU is 5-3 in matches on the road.
The Auburn Tigers are led by No. 27-ranked freshman Fani Chifchieva, a Plovdid, Bulgaria native. She is 13-4 in the No. 1 slot in dual play.
Chifchieva will put her record up against LSU’s No. 3-ranked sophomore Megan Falcon, who is 28-2 overall, 18-0 in the No. 1 slot in dual play and 9-0 in the SEC.
In doubles play, Alex Haney and Melissa Koning of Auburn rank No. 14 by ITA.
The Lady Tigers will look to improve their doubles play and remain consistent in singles play. Freshman Hannah Robinson is 22-8 overall and 8-1 in the SEC.
With three straight wins, freshman Nicole Kantor has improved her record to 15-14, while sophomore Staten Spencer has reached the .500 mark in dual play.
The Lady Tigers defeated the Auburn Tigers in Baton Rouge a year ago by a 5-2 margin. They have won the last four contests and lead the all-time series, 21-8.
After this match the Lady Tigers will take a short break from SEC play to welcome Marshall to the “Dub” on Thursday at 3 p.m. They will end the regular season with a trip to Arkansas on Saturday, April 14.
