BATON ROUGE — Shortstop Michael Hollander and gymnast Ashleigh Clare-Kearney were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Hollander launched a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lift LSU to a 5-4 victory over Alabama on Friday. Hollander’s home run came on a 1-2 count against Alabama ace receiver Tommy Hunter.
For the series, Hollander led LSU with a .364 batting average as he collected four RBI and scored three runs.
Including the Tigers’ midweek victory over New Orleans, Hollander hit .429 with two homers, six RBI and four runs scored on the week.
Clare-Kearney earned first-team all-conference honors in leading the Tigers to a fourth-place finish at Saturday’s SEC Gymnastics Championships. The junior from Manchester, Conn., earned the distinction after finishing third in the all-around and second on the vault with marks of 39.525 and 9.950, respectively.
Clare-Kearney also posted two other top-10 finishes as she placed fourth on the beam (9.875) and eighth on the bars (9.850).
