Fowles, Bryan Named LSU Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Tennis player Danny Bryan and center Sylvia Fowles were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Bryan, a senior out of New Orleans, opened last week with the biggest win of his career as he upset 12th-ranked Ryan Rowe of Illinois in straight sets. The victory helped secure LSU’s thrilling 4-3 upset over sixth-ranked Illinois and placed Bryan in sole possession of 20th place on LSU’s career singles wins list.

In addition, Bryan teamed with Colt Gaston to knock off the Illini’s G.D. Jones and Marc Spicijaric, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers. The win, the 100th doubles victory of Bryan’s career, moved the pair to an impressive 16-1 on the season.

Later in the week, Bryan picked up another straight-sets win against a ranked opponent as he defeated No. 117 Yevgeny Supeko of South Carolina, 6-4, 6-2.

Fowles led the Lady Tigers basketball team to wins over West Virginia and Florida State in the NCAA Tournament. The Miami, Fla. native had 21 points and 13 rebounds in the win over WVU in the second round and then added 20 points and nine boards in the Lady Tigers’ Sweet 16 victory over FSU.

The double double against the Mountaineers was the 61st of Fowles’ career and her 26th of the season. She also moved up to ninth-place on LSU’s career scoring list with her 20 points against the Seminoles.
