BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Kelly Phelan was named to the 2007 SEC Gymnastics Community Service Team the conference office announced on Tuesday.
The SEC sponsors a Community Service Team for each of the 20 sports it sponsors. The Gymnastics Community Service Team highlights seven gymnasts, one from each participating institution, that give back to the community in superior service efforts.
Phelan, who serves as the President of LSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, has led LSU’s charge in community service this year.
Along side Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden, Phelan took part in National Adoption Month which encourages members of the community to adopt. She also volunteered at the Louisiana Gumbo Games for handicapped children and took part in River Oak Elementary’s Literacy Night by reading stories to the children.
In addition, Phelan has been instrumental in several events that helped raise money for the fight against breast cancer as she volunteered at the ZTA Pancake Breakfast and participated in the Baton Rouge area Race for the Cure.
Phelan has also visited the Children’s Ward at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Hospital on several occasions, taken part in the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon and participated in both LSU’s annual Halloween BOOzar and Christmas Toy Drive, that both benefit local children in the community.
