Gloeckner, Malberg Post Career Bests at NCAA’s

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Sophomore Julius Gloeckner improved his school-record time in the 200 individual medley, and junior Miko Malberg posted a career-fast clocking in the 50 freestyle Thursday as the 2007 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships opened at the Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Gloeckner, who was seeded 23rd in the 200 IM, was one spot away from qualifying for the finals and earning All-America honors with 17th place. He recorded a time of 1:46.28, which was one second better than his previous career-best time of 1:47.26.

Gloeckner had already secured the school record with that time at the Last Chance Meet. Arizona’s Adam Ritter won the event with a time of 1:41.72.

Malberg notched a career-high in the 50 free prelims, swimming a 21st-place mark of 19.69. Malberg improved on his previous career-high and seed time of 19.78. The clocking of 19.69 registered as the fourth-best time in school history.

Gloeckner returns to action Friday as the fifth seed in the 400 IM. He will look to improve on his school record in that event as he carries a mark of 3:46.84. Sophomore Christoph Lubenau makes his NCAA debut as well as the No. 17 seed in the 100 butterfly (47.38).
