BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis swept singles play defeating 47th-ranked University of Minnesota, 6-0, on Wednesday. Due to rain, the doubles matches were unable to be finished.
“Minnesota is a good team. They have had a very nice season so far. I was proud of the way we played,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “I felt like we didn’t come out quite as prepared as we should have in a couple of positions, but we fought our way back and took care of business.”
The Lady Tigers began the match with singles play. Rain caused play to be delayed approximately an hour and half. After the courts dried the match resumed, and the Lady Tigers came out strong winning all six matches.
No. 2?ranked Megan Falcon grabbed the first singles point for the Lady Tigers as she defeated the Golden Gopher’s Ashley Schellhas on court one in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. With this win, Falcon remains undefeated in the No. 1 slot in dual play.
Junior Anastasiya Dubova finished second as she downed Karina Chiarelli on court six in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
The third singles point for LSU came as freshman Hannah Robinson defeated Minnesota’s Tijana Koprivica on court four, also in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Robinson improved her winning streak to 10 with this match.
To clinch the win for LSU, freshman Nicole Kantor defeated Danielle Mousseau on court three in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
On courts two and five, sophomore Mykala Hedberg and junior Tiffany Tucker split sets forcing a third to be played.
On court two, Hedberg dropped the first set 7-5. She would not give up another game for the remainder of the match as she blanked the Golden Gopher’s Lindsay Risebrough in sets three and four to grab the fifth singles point for LSU.
On court five, Tucker dropped the first set 6-4 and came back fighting to win the second set by the same score. Tucker and Minnesota’s Ida Malmberg battled back and fourth in the third set.
They were tied at 4-4, Tucker went ahead 5-4, and then Malmberg retaliated to tie the score again at 5-5. Tucker took the next two games to win the match 7-5 and complete the singles sweep for LSU.
After beginning doubles play rain started up again and doubles play was forced to be called off.
Up next, the Lady Tigers will face Tulsa on Friday at 3 p.m. CT at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
