BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Ashleigh Clare-Kearney was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week the conference office announced on Tuesday. The league honor marks the second of the season for the Manchester, Conn., native who was also recognized on Jan. 16.
Clare-Kearney led the Tigers to a season-high 197.175 in it win over No. 17 Penn State last Friday as she either won outright or shared each of the meet’s four individual event titles en route to winning her fourth all-around title of the season with a career-high 39.675. Clare-Kearney’s all-around score ranks as the third best in the NCAA this season and ties her with two others as the best in the SEC to date.
Clare-Kearney continued her dominance on the vault, winning her ninth meet title in 10 tries this season with a near-perfect 9.975. The 5-4, junior also turned in career-highs of 9.900 on the beam and 9.875 on the bars as well as a 9.925 on the floor to finish on top of the standings in those events.
Clare-Kearney and the rest of the LSU gymnastics team returns to competition this Friday when they host No. 5 Nebraska in the 2007 home finale at the PMAC beginning at 7 p.m.
