BATON ROUGE — Pitchers Charlie Furbush and Dani Hofer were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Furbush led LSU to a 2-1 victory over Southern Miss on Friday, limiting the Golden Eagles to one unearned run on just three hits in eight innings of work. The junior from South Portland, Maine, recorded five strikeouts and did not walk a batter as only one Southern Miss runner advanced beyond first base during his time on the mound.
With the win, Furbush improved his record to 3-1 on the season with a 2.61 ERA. In 31 innings this year he has recorded 28 strikeouts and 11 walks, while holding his opponents to a .246 batting average.
Hofer pitched a pair of complete-game shutouts last week against Ole Miss as the Tigers opened up SEC play. The sophomore from Safety Harbor, Fla., stuck out 14 batters and did not allow a walk as she held her opponents to just a .115 batting average in 16 innings of action.
With the two victories Hofer, who was also named both the SEC and LSWA Pitcher of the Week, pushed her record to 10-1 on the season.
