Football Enjoys Day Off Following Scrimmage

BATON ROUGE — A day after going through its first live contact of the spring season, the LSU football team took Wednesday off from practice as they approach the end of its second week of spring drills.

The Tigers used Wednesday afternoon to hold a team meeting with head coach Les Miles before breaking up into position meetings. LSU will hold another practice on Thursday before going through a full-scale scrimmage on Saturday.

In Tuesday’s 30-minute scrimmage, the staff had the No. 1 offense facing the No. 2 defense as well as the No. 1 defense going against the No. 2 offense. The third unit also got in a handful of plays.

“It was a nice practice,” Miles said. “We went live for about 30 minutes, going mostly 1s versus 2s. Both quarterbacks looked good and I thought Early (Doucet) made a couple of nice catches.

“The defense was dominant versus the second offense and the offense was dominant against the second defense. It was a good practice, crisp tackling a not one turnover, which is a good news, bad news. I like where we are going. The team has a great attitude and they are working hard. The veteran guys are looking like veterans, and the young guys are trying to get there. I like the progress that is being made in the offensive line. Those guys are working hard and competing well.”

Miles complimented the play of quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux as well as the playmaking of wide receiver Early Doucet.

“It is way too early to tell,” Miles said when asked which player was leading the quarterback derby. “Ryan made a couple of nice throws, one of which was dropped. Flynn hit a couple of deep balls to Early Doucet. Both guys played well.”

A couple highlights of the brief scrimmage had Flynn connecting with Doucet on TD passes on 45 and 10-yards. Perrilloux completed passes of 10 yards to running back Jacob Hester and 12 yards to tight end Mit Cole against the No. 1 defense.

Defensively, linebacker Luke Sanders had a tackle for a 4-yard loss against the No. 2 offense, while defensive end Tyson Jackson had a sack.
