Baseball Set to End Homestand Against Lipscomb

BATON ROUGE — LSU (7-4) concludes its eight-game homestand this weekend when the Tigers play host to Lipscomb (9-4) in Alex Box Stadium.

Game 1 of the LSU-Lipscomb series is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Game 2 will start at 2 p.m. Saturday, and Game 3 begins at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets for each game are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12. Tickets are available at Alex Box Stadium each day two hours prior to first pitch, or they may be purchased and printed at www.LSUsports.net. Fans who present an LSU-South Carolina men’s basketball ticket/stub at any of the baseball games this weekend will be admitted for just $4/adults and $2/youth.

Admission to the LSU men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. Saturday vs. South Carolina is only $5 when fans present a ticket stub from Saturday’s LSU-Lipscomb baseball game.

The LSU-Lipscomb games on Friday and Sunday will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network with WDGL 98.1 FM as the Baton Rouge affiliate. Saturday’s game will also be carried on the LSU Sports Radio Network, and it can be heard in Baton Rouge on KNXX 104.5/104.9 FM.

The audio broadcasts, streaming video and live stats are available in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net.

LSU will attempt on Friday night to end a two-game losing streak, including an 8-3 setback to Tulane Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.

Lipscomb, located in Nashville, Tenn., enters Friday’s game riding a four-game win streak, including a 4-1 victory over Middle Tennessee State Wednesday afternoon. Lipscomb is a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference and joined NCAA Division I prior to the 2001 season.

“We certainly will have to be at our best to win this weekend,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “Lipscomb is playing very well right now, and they have an excellent pitching staff. They won on the road at Auburn, and they defeated two Big East teams that I’m very familiar with in Boston College and Pittsburgh. I’m looking forward to seeing our team compete this weekend against a quality ball club.”

Lipscomb defeated Auburn, 4-3 in 12 innings, on February 14 at Auburn. That loss is the only blemish on Auburn’s record, as the Plainsmen are now 11-1 this season.

Junior left-hander Charlie Furbush (2-1) will start Friday’s game on the mound for LSU. Furbush enjoyed an excellent outing last weekend in a victory over Central Florida, limiting the Golden Knights to one run on four hits in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.

First-year Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand will counter on Friday with senior right-hander John King (0-1).

LSU freshman leftfielder Blake Dean continues to lead the Tigers at the plate, batting .417 (15-for-36) with three doubles, two triples, one homer and 12 RBI.

Centerfielder Jared Mitchell, named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday, is hitting .304 (14-for-46) with one double, one homer, 10 runs, six RBI and four steals.

The Bisons, batting .273 as a team, are led at the plate by catcher Caleb Joseph, who is hitting .432 (19-for-44) with nine doubles, 10 runs and nine RBI.
