Hofer, Mitchell Named LSU Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Centerfielder Jared Mitchell and pitcher Dani Hofer were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Mitchell, a freshman from New Iberia, La., hit .462 (6-of-13) in three games with one double, one homer, three RBI and four runs to lead LSU to a series victory over Central Florida last weekend in Alex Box Stadium.

Including the Tigers’ 6-2 victory over Northwestern State last Wednesday, Mitchell batted .471 on the week, while adding a pair of hits and a run against the Demons. Mitchell, who is also a wide receiver on the LSU football team, also recorded one steal and a .500 on-base percentage in leading the Tigers to a trio of victories last week.

Hofer earned MVP honors at the Easton Purple & Gold Challenge over the weekend as she threw her second no-hitter this season with a five-inning no-no against Southern Miss on Sunday. The sophomore from Safety Harbor, Fla., was just two walks away from a perfect game against the Golden Eagles as she struck out 13 of the 17 batters she faced and accounted for 13 of the Tigers’ 15 outs.

In her three appearances in the circle, two of which were complete games, Hofer did not allow a run and only gave up three hits. Hofer now owns a perfect 7-0 record this season.
