BATON ROUGE — LSU centerfielder Jared Mitchell was named Monday as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week by the league office.
Mitchell, a product of Westgate High School in New Iberia, La., hit .462 (6-for-13) in LSU’s series victory over Central Florida last weekend with one double, one homer, three RBI and four runs.
For the entire week — including the Tigers’ 6-2 victory over Northwestern State last Wednesday — Mitchell batted .471 (8-for-17) in four games with one double, one homer, five runs and three RBI.
Mitchell, who is also a wide receiver on the LSU football team, recorded one steal and a .500 on-base percentage in leading the Tigers to three wins.
Mitchell is LSU’s second-leading hitter through the first 10 games of the 2007 season, batting .333 (14-for-42) with one double, one homer, 10 runs, six RBI and four steals.
