BATON ROUGE — Swimmer Julius Gloeckner and gymnast Ashleigh Clare-Kearney were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Gloeckner, a sophomore from Freiburg, Germany, broke three school records over the weekend at the Last Chance Meet in Athens, Ga. He shattered records in the 400 individual medley, 200 individual medley and the 200 butterfly.
Gloeckner now holds more school records than any LSU swimmer in school history, surpassing the likes of school record holders Rodrigo Castro (2000), Nate Thomson (1997) and Evan Martinec (2004), who each claimed two school records in their respective events.
Clare-Kearney led the Tigers to win over No. 11 Auburn last week, winning the meet’s all-around, vault and bars titles. The all-around win marked the second of the season for the junior from Manchester, Conn., while the vault title was her sixth in seven meets this season.
Following her performance, Clare-Kearney jumped to No. 1 in the national vault rankings. She is also listed in the national all-around standings for the first time in her career, entering the rankings at No. 14.
