PARRISH, Fla. — LSU made a big second round move on the field in the afternoon round of the Central District Invitational and stands in fourth place after 36 holes Monday of the 54-hole event to open the Lady Tigers spring season.
LSU came back from a 22 over par round of 310 in the morning, to shoot 10-over 298 in the second round to finish the 36 holes at 32-over par 608.
Texas A&M is the first day leader at 11-over par 587 (291-296) with Michigan State, the host team, in second at 17-over 593 (296-297). Texas at 607 (295-312) is one shot ahead of the Lady Tigers in third.
After making just three birdies in the opening round, the Lady Tigers had 12 in the second round to keep the team in contention for a top three finish in the tournament which concludes with the final 18 holes Tuesday morning.
Melissa Eaton, LSU’s top average player in the fall, continued where she left off with rounds of 77-73 for a six-over 150, good enough for a tie for 12th after 36 holes. The individual leader is Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M at four-under 140 (67-73), one shot better than Sara Brown of Michigan State
(71-70) at 141.
Rebecca Kuhn is one shot back in a tie for 18th at 151 (76-75), while Kim Meck had two rounds of 77. Alexis Rather counted an 80 in the first round, while Caroline Martens came back from an 81 in the morning round to shoot 73 in the afternoon round.
“I’m very pleased with the way we stayed with it and came back in the afternoon and posted a great score,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “That was important after we struggled in the morning. I think that’s a good sign as to how this team put what happened behind them and really made the shots in the second round. Now it’s important to see what happens in the final round. We’ve had a couple of chances in the fall to move up on the final day and didn’t follow through.”
