Women’s Tennis Completes Sweep of Houston, 7-0

HOUSTON — The LSU women’s tennis team added another sweep on the weekend as they defeated the University of Houston at the John E. Hoff Varsity Tennis Courts on Monday.

“We played really well today,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We came out and really took care of business.”

The Lady Tigers jumped ahead early sweeping doubles play. On court three junior Tiffany Tucker and freshman Ashley Murdock defeated Houston’s Leila Salek and Jill Weatherford, 8-4.

LSU’s doubles performance remained strong as No. 10-ranked Megan Falcon and Hannah Robinson defeated Sonja Nikolic and Anna Djananova, 8-1, on court one.

On court two sophomores Mykala Hedberg and Staten Spencer remained perfect beating Loli Gomez and Neila Starratt, 8-0.

In singles play the Lady Tigers completed the sweep grabbing five of the six matches in straight sets. On court one, No. 2 Falcon blanked her opponent Gomez, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 83 Hedberg won her first set 6-0 on court two against Salek. She then secured the win, 6-4, in the second set.

On court three freshman Nicole Kantor battled with Houston’s Nikolic and came out on top as she won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Robinson and Spencer battled on courts four and five, respectively. They both won in straight sets against Houston’s Djananova and Starratt.

Tucker fought hard to grab the sweep for the Lady Tigers as she defeated Vicky Simpson on court six in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.

Up next, the Lady Tigers will return home and prepare for their second home match against Florida State on Friday, Feb. 23, at 3 p.m. CST.

This match will be part of the USTA Adult League Days hosted by the LSU men’s and women’s tennis programs.

The 20th-ranked men’s team will face No. 30 Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. The USTA team that brings the most fans to support these two matches will receive a grand prize which will include two hours of lessons with the LSU teams and coaches.
