HOUSTON — The LSU women’s tennis team improved its record to 4-1 as it swept Rice on Saturday afternoon at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
“It was pretty windy conditions, but we grinded it out. I think both teams played well,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We fought hard and came out with the victory. I was really pleased with the effort.”
The Lady Tigers jumped out ahead early by sweeping doubles to grab the first point. On court three, junior Tiffany Tucker and freshmen Ashley Murdock defeated Rice’s Emily Braid and Veronica Sagastequi, 8-2.
On court two, sophomore Staten Spencer and Mykala Hedberg grabbed the win against Rice’s Rebecca Lin and Domonique Karas, 8-4.
On court one the 10th-ranked duo of Megan Falcon and Hannah Robinson completed the sweep defeating Julie Chao and Tiffany Lea, 8-4.
LSU swept singles play, but it did not come easy as three of the matches went to a 10-point tiebreaker.
LSU sophomores Spencer and Hedberg claimed the first two matches in singles, each by a 6-1, 6-0 count.
Nicole Kantor clinched the win for the Lady Tigers by outlasting Domonique Karas, 6-4, 6-1.
Up next the Lady Tigers face the University of Houston on Monday, Feb. 19, at 1:30 p.m. CST in Texas.
