BATON ROUGE — Tiger outfielder Blake Dean and Lady Tiger catcher Kristen Hobbs were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Dean, a true freshman, enjoyed a tremendous collegiate debut in the Tigers’ three-game series sweep of Saint Mary’s over the weekend. The Crestview, Fla., native hit .571 (4-for-7) with one double, one homer, four runs scored and five RBI.
In addition, Dean walked four times to record a .667 on-base percentage in the series. The 6-0, leftfielder also launched a three-run homer in his first collegiate at-bat on Friday, giving LSU a 3-0 first-inning lead as the Tigers went on to record a 4-3 victory.
Hobbs was named the MVP of the Easton Tiger Classic after hitting four home runs, including a grand slam in the top of the ninth that led to a 7-2 LSU win over Memphis in the tournament’s championship game.
For the weekend, the senior from Palm Beach, Fla., led the team in batting average (.533), slugging percentage (1.333), hits (8), runs scored (5) and RBI (9). In addition, Hobbs’ two home runs against Missouri tied the LSU school record for homers in a game.
