SAN DIEGO — The LSU women’s team opened its season with a 6-1 victory on the road against the University of San Diego on Tuesday.
“I thought we started strong with doubles,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “In singles we fought hard and played well to come out with the win.”
In doubles play, No. 10-ranked Megan Falcon and Hannah Robinson defeated their opponents Monica Wiesner and Samantha Mouly, 8-3.
Sophomores Mykala Hedberg and Staten Spencer won their doubles match against USD’s Alexandra Demidova and Sophia Vogt, 8-1.
In the No. 3 doubles spot, junior Tiffany Tucker and freshman Nicole Kantor were leading their match by a score of 6-2 when USD’s Helene Lindstrand and Justine Perl were forced to retire from the match.
After grabbing the doubles point the Lady Tigers went on to take five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory.
Falcon and Kantor both defeated their opponents in straight sets. In the No. 1 spot Falcon beat USD’s Monica Wiesner, 6-3, 6-4. In the fourth spot Kantor defeated the Aztec’s Zoe Taylor, 6-2, 6-0.
Hedberg, Robinson and Ashley Murdock fought hard as they won their matches in three sets in the two, five and six spots, respectively.
Up next, the Lady Tigers remain in San Diego to continue non-conference play against the No. 46-ranked University of San Diego on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CST. Top players for the Aztecs are No. 51 Holly Bagshaw and No. 69 Elisa Krausova.
