BATON ROUGE — Alex Box Stadium will play host to a pair of events Saturday as the countdown to the start of LSU’s baseball season continues.
Saturday’s activities begin with the YMCA Baton Rouge Kids’ Baseball Clinic, which will be conducted from 9 a.m. until Noon. The event is a free instructional clinic conducted by LSU and Southern University players and coaches, along with professional players, scouts and coaches. Autograph and photo opportunities will be available following the clinic.
“The Kids’ Clinic is a great Baton Rouge tradition and a great community event,” said first-year LSU coach Paul Mainieri, “and I’m proud that our players and the Southern players can provide this service to the youngsters in our area.”
The YMCA clinic will be followed at 2 p.m. by an LSU intrasquad scrimmage as the Tigers prepare for their Feb. 9 season opener versus Saint Mary’s (Calif.). Admission to the scrimmage is free.
Saturday’s scrimmage is being held in conjunction with LSU’s First Pitch Alumni Weekend, which began on Thursday with a banquet in the Maravich Center and continued Friday with a golf tournament at LSU.
Several former LSU players are scheduled to attend the scrimmage, including members of the Tigers’ 1996 and 1997 national championship teams.
“I’ve really enjoyed interacting with all of the alums who have come back this weekend,” said Mainieri, a 1976 LSU letterman as an outfielder. “I’ve also received letters of encouragement and support from many of the alums.
“There is such a rich tradition at LSU and the former players have a lot of pride in what they developed here. I feel a great responsibility to do my part to restore the glory of LSU Baseball.”
