BATON ROUGE — After winning the doubles point and two of the six singles matches the LSU women’s tennis team was again forced to delay its season opener on Wednesday at the YMCA Lamar Tennis Center.
With only two points needed to clinch the win the Lady Tigers were forced to stop play. The entire match will have to be re-scheduled for a later date.
“For most of these girls it was their first match. We played well and we were in a position to win,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We were up on all the courts. It is very disappointing that we did all the work to put ourselves in a position to win and now we have to start totally over. But, at the same time, that is how it goes.”
The Lady Tigers gained the early lead by grabbing the doubles point to open the match. On courts two and three LSU defeated ULL with identical scores of 8-3. On court two, Mykala Hedberg and Staten Spencer downed ULL’s Myrthe Molenveld and Clemence Remy, while on court three Tiffany Tucker and Nicole Kantor defeated ULL’s Kimmie Lyles and Angela Dangond.
In singles play, Spencer finished her match in just under an hour as she defeated the Ragin Cajun’s Clemence Remy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Not long after Hedberg grabbed the second singles win for the Lady Tigers in straight sets against ULL’s Myrthe Molenveld.
The courts started to get too wet to continue play. Both teams moved indoors and attempted to wait it out. After about an hour the rain had not let up and the officials were forced to postpone the match.
LSU will travel throughout the month of February for its next five matches. The first of which will take place against San Diego on Feb 6 at 3:30 p.m.
