BATON ROUGE — With the sun shining for the first time in over two weeks, the LSU softball team took advantage of the wonderful weather to continue practicing outdoors at Tiger Park and the Charles McClendon Football Practice Facility on Thursday.

“What a beautiful day in the capital city,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “For a while I thought I’d never get to say that again but it’s awfully nice to see the sun.”

With the outfield still saturated from the torrential rain recently, the team went through drills separately for the first half of practice. The infielders and pitchers went through drills on the Tiger Park infield, fielding ground balls on the dirt while they re-acclimate to practice outdoors again.

“We were able to get some good infield work in,” said Girouard.

The outfielders spent the entire practice on the football practice fields, where the grass was much less saturated. Midway through the two-hour practice, the infielders and pitchers joined the outfielders at the football facility for a full squad practice.

“I haven’t done this in a long time, maybe since my high school days, having to go over to a football practice field to try to scrimmage and have a workout with the outfield,” said Girouard. “Out outfield at Tiger Park is basically like Tiger Stadium was before they really did some drainage work there.”

The Tigers will close out their weekday practice schedule on Friday at 3 p.m. LSU will hold its second preseason scrimmage on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Tigers will open the season on Friday, Feb. 9 against Memphis at Tiger Park in the Tiger Classic at 3:30 p.m. LSU will then take on Centenary, Middle Tennessee and Missouri before beginning bracket play in the three-day tournament.
