BATON ROUGE — Sprinter Richard Thompson and Lady Tiger center Sylvia Fowles were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Thompson, who is currently ranked fourth in the country in the 60-meter dash, clocked back-to-back NCAA provisionally qualifying times in the event to take first place at the Modrall Spring Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday.

The junior from Mount Hope, Trinidad, ran the second-fastest 60-meter time in school history en route to the victory, clocking an altitude adjusted 6.67 seconds in the finals. The time, a new facility record at the Albuquerque Convention Center, was just a split second off that of former LSU great Kelly Willie who holds the school record at 6.66.

In addition, Thompson finished fourth in the 200 meters with an indoor personal best of 21.30, a time that ranks as the10th fastest in school history.

Fowles averaged 16 points and 11.5 rebounds in leading LSU to a sweep of SEC opponents Kentucky and Alabama last week.

Fowles poured in 16 points and added 11 rebounds and two blocked shots against the Wildcats before finishing the week off with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots against the Tide.

The junior center from Miami has now recorded seven straight double double performances, bringing her season and career totals to 13 and 48, respectively.

Fowles also moved up the charts in two LSU career categories as she improved to fourth in rebounds (953) and 14th in scoring (1,331). In addition, she surpassed the 200 career blocked shots milestone as she currently sits with 201.
