BATON ROUGE –The LSU softball team concluded its second week of preseason practice with a two-hour scrimmage in the Charles McClendon Indoor Practice Facility on Saturday morning.
Due to the rainy weather, the Tigers have been confined to the indoor facility the entire week, after having practiced outdoors for two-a-days last week. Because of the indoor facility, the team is able to continue a regular practice schedule, with only a few minor adjustments.
“It’s been a good week of practice despite the fact that we’ve been inside all week long,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “The weather had really wreaked havoc with our field.”
On Saturday, the team went through a 16-inning scrimmage. The four Tiger pitchers rotated each inning with each getting a total of four innings. At the plate, the hitters rotated through the entire batting lineup several times as the players filled in positions in the field as needed.
After falling one game short of the Women’s College World Series a year ago, LSU came back with a renewed passion this season. The players have taken ownership of the team and realize that they control their own destiny, which can take them as far as they want to go.
“I like what I see so far defensively and I like what I see in their eyes swinging the bat,” said Girouard. “The pitchers look really good right now. We are making the best of a bad situation with the weather but luckily we have this facility. We are really pleased with the team so far.”
The Tigers resume their regular schedule on Tuesday. LSU will practice Tuesday through Friday at 3 p.m. before holding a similar scrimmage next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Tigers are hoping to get back outdoors during the week, but are at the mercy of the weather and will continue going indoors as needed.
