ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The LSU women’s tennis team experienced a very successful day at the Michigan Classic as they won six singles and two doubles matches on Saturday.
“We played really well. In singles, Denver was a very competitive team,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “I was impressed with the play of our freshman, and our doubles performance was very solid.”
In doubles play, the duo of Megan Falcon and Hannah Robinson defeated Michigan’s Kara Delicata and Chisako Sugiyame, 8-3. Juniors Tiffany Tucker and Anastasiya Dubova also grabbed the win against their opponents Elizabeth Exon and Tania Mahtani, 8-2.
Sophomores Staten Spencer and Mykala Hedberg were not as fortunate as they fell to Jenny Keuhn and Allie Shafner, 8-3.
In singles play the Lady Tigers were very successful against the Denver Pioneers as they won six of their eight matches on the day. Robinson and freshmen Nicole Kantor both defeated their opponents in straight sets with identical scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Ashley Murdock also came out on top in straight sets as she defeated Denver’s Kyla Iwinski, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Tiffany Tucker won a hard fought first set against Michigan’s Rachel Sackmaster, 7-5. Tucker came out on top as the two battled the second set to a 7-6(5) tiebreaker.
Spencer and Dubova both took their matches into three sets and were able to grab wins for the Lady Tigers. Spencer defeated Denver’s Ute Schnoy, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0, while Dubova battled with Denver’s Lorinda Boothman winning her match 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Lady Tigers will resume tournament play Sunday at 8 a.m. CST as they face No. 58 Denver in doubles play followed by singles matches against the No. 10-ranked Duke.
