Soccer’s Makasini, Potts Named to All-Region Team

BATON ROUGE — LSU freshmen Michelle Makasini and Chelsea Potts continue to garner postseason recognition for their outstanding play during the 2006 season as each received all-region accolades by Soccer Buzz Magazine on Tuesday.

Potts received a pair of all-region honors by being named a Soccer Buzz Third-Team All-Central Region selection and a member of the organization’s Central Region All-Freshman Team, while Makasini was also named a member of the Soccer Buzz Central Region All-Freshman Team.

“We’re proud of what these two young ladies have accomplished in just their first season here at LSU,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “They embody everything we look for in a representative of this university, and we look forward to them maturing as student-athletes on and off the field over the next three years.”

Potts established herself as one of the nation’s top young center backs this season as she was one of two Tigers to earn Second-Team All-SEC recognition and one of three to be named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in November. The Aurora, Ill., native has also been named to the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie Third-Team after starting all 20 games for the Tigers this season.

Makasini finished the season as the SEC’s second-leading scorer with 11 goals and tied the LSU freshman record of 29 points previously held by former Tiger Stacy Bishop in the 2003 season. She proved to be one of the league’s top scoring threats throughout the season as she was named SEC Freshman of the Week four times and SEC Offensive Player of the Week once.

The Euless, Texas, native is one of the most decorated freshmen in school history as she was recently named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and a member of the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie First-Team. In addition, Makasini was named both the Louisiana Player and Freshman of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association last week.

This marks the 11th season in which Soccer Buzz Magazine has presented postseason accolades as student-athletes representing 67 universities across the Central Region were eligible for nomination. Awards were decided by a vote open to all Division I head coaches and a member of the Soccer Buzz staff.
