HAMMOND, La. — LSU received a state-high four first team selections on the 2006 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Women’s Soccer Team, which was released Saturday.
LSU’s Michelle Makasini pulled a sweep by being selected as the state’s Player and Freshman of the Year. McNeese State’s Scooter Savoie was selected as the Louisiana Coach of the Year.
Makasini was joined on the first team by teammates Roslyn Jones, Chelsea Potts and Malorie Rutledge. Southeastern Louisiana, which won the 2006 Southland Conference regular season title, also placed multiple players on the first team. The Lady Lion representatives were Kari Yost, Danielle Shank and Crista Wood.
LSU-Shreveport was represented on the first team by sophomore forward Julia Vaughn. McNeese State’s Kamryn Koch, Natasha Nzeakor of Grambling and Northwestern State’s Erin Hebert completed the first team. Eleven student-athletes were selected as honorable mention selections.
Makasini, a native of Euless, Texas, received the state’s top honor and was selected as the state’s top freshman, as she finished the season as the team’s leading scorer and the second-leading scorer in the SEC with 11 goals and an LSU freshman record of 29 points on the year, while also leading the team and finishing third in the SEC with seven assists.
Savoie led McNeese State to its first-ever Southland Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Cowgirls finished the season with a school-record eight shutouts and 10 victories.
The 2006 LSWA All-Louisiana Soccer Team was selected by the state’s sports information directors.
