BATON ROUGE — Quarterback JaMarcus Russell and swimmer Signe Larson were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Russell led the Tigers to a 28-24 come from behind victory over eighth-ranked Tennessee in Knoxville on Saturday. The junior from Mobile, Ala., engineering the game-winning, 80-yard drive that was capped by a four-yard touchdown pass to Early Doucet with nine seconds to go in the contest.
Russell finished the day connecting on 24 of his 36 passes for 247 yards and three scores. He also rushed the ball seven times for a career-high 71 yards.
Larson led the Lady Tigers’ swimming and diving team to their second straight team victory Saturday as they knocked off SEC foe, Arkansas, 171-129. The freshman from Portland, Ore., captured two individual event titles in the win, finishing first in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter breaststroke with times of 1:05.26 and 2:21.63, respectively.
