Soccer’s Makasini, Potts Named to All-Rookie Team

BATON ROUGE — LSU freshmen Michelle Makasini and Chelsea Potts continue to be recognized among the top newcomers in the country as each was named to the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie Team as announced by the organization Sunday.

Makasini, who was one of 11 freshmen to be named to the SEC All-Freshman Team a week ago, is one of 36 newcomers from across the country to be named to the TDS All-Rookie First-Team after finishing the 2006 season as the SEC’s second leading scorer with 11 goals and 29 points.

The Euless, Texas, native proved her worth as one of the top scoring threats in the country as she was named SEC Freshman of the Week on four occasions and SEC Offensive Player of the Week once after coming to Baton Rouge as a Soccer Buzz Top 75 Recruit for the Class of 2006.

“It’s exciting to be considered one of the top freshmen in the country, and it just shows how all of the hard work we put in this year has paid off,” Makasini said. “I wouldn’t be in the position that I am without the great teammates I have, and I’m just proud of the way we competed this season. I’m excited about what the next few years will bring for this program.”

Potts has been recognized as one of the top freshman defenders in the country as she is a member of the TDS All-Rookie Third-Team for her stellar play along LSU’s back line this season. The Aurora, Ill., native was one of two Tigers to earn Second-Team All-SEC recognition last week and one of three to be named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

“I agree with Michelle that it’s great to be considered one of the best at what you do, but none of this would happen without the help of my teammates or (head coach) Brian (Lee) for being the coach that he is,” Potts said. “I’ve enjoyed playing with these girls this season and am fortunate to have the opportunity to play with so many great players over the next three years.”
