BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s basketball team moved down four sports to 10th in the Associated Press poll and six spots to 12th in the ESPN/USA Today poll after the Tigers 57-53 loss to Wichita State here Saturday.
LSU next plays Wednesday night against McNeese State in a 7 p.m. game at the Maravich Assembly Center. Tickets for the game are available online at www.LSUsports.net. Fans coming to the game Wednesday night can participate in local meteorologist Pat Shingleton’s “Pat’s Coats For Kids” campaign by bringing a new or used coat or a $5 donation. Those taking part in the campaign at the game sit will receive a coupon for a $1 ticket to the game.
The 2-1 Tigers in the media poll find themselves at a big break point in the voting points as the AP voters have put No. 9 Dec. 5 opponent Texas A&M at 1,213 points with LSU in 10th at 985 points, 39 ahead of No. 11 Duke.
The two polls differ on the No. 1-ranked team with UCLA on top at 4-0 in the AP poll with 36 of the 72 votes. Pittsburgh (18 votes) is second, Ohio State (15) is third and Florida (3) is fourth. Alabama of the SEC is sixth.
In the coaches’ poll, Ohio State didn’t get the majority of first-place votes but is No. 1 by six points over UCLA. Ohio State got 11 first-place votes for its 6-0 record, while UCLA’s 4-0 marked earned them the first place ballots of 13 coaches. Number three Pittsburgh got five votes and fourth-ranked Florida got the remaining two votes in fourth. Alabama is seventh in this poll.
Duke and Washington are the two teams placed ahead of LSU in the coaches’ poll that are behind the Tigers in the AP poll.
Both Tennessee and Kentucky dropped out of the poll this week.
