BATON ROUGE — Swimmer Julius Gloeckner and volleyball’s Lauren DeGirolamo were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Gloeckner, a native of Freiburg, Germany, helped LSU to a victory at the Art Adamson Invitational last weekend as the Tigers topped three other teams, including No. 25 Texas A&M.
In the victory, Gloeckner recorded three individual wins, three NCAA provisional cuts and helped LSU to another two relay titles. The sophomore won the 500 freestyle championship final with an NCAA provisional cut time of 4:23.62, while also taking top honors in the 200 free (1:37.30) and the 200 butterfly (1:47.34).
DeGirolamo led LSU to a split of SEC matches as the Tigers swept Mississippi State and lost a hard-fought five-game battle at Ole Miss. A native of Belleville, Ill., DeGirolamo led the team in hitting percentage and blocks for the week, recording a .438 mark to go along with 12 blocks. In addition, the freshman middle blocker turned in nine kills and a .500 hitting percentage against Mississippi State. She then added a career-high 17 kills against Ole Miss to go along with an impressive .406 hitting percentage.
With her performance, DeGirolamo moved into LSU’s all-time top 10 in single-season block assists, advancing all the way to the No. 7 position.
