BATON ROUGE — LSU players swept the Louisiana Sports Writers Association college football player of the week honors announced Monday after the nationally-ranked Tigers downed Alabama, 28-14, last Saturday in Tiger Stadium.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Junior quarterback JaMarcus Russell captured offensive honors while SEC Defensive Player of the Week Tyson Jackson added the state defensive honor to his resume’.
Russell completed 18-of-21 passes against the Tide for 207 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, also rushing for 36 yards on seven carries. He guided the Tigers on scoring drives on their first three possessions as LSU built a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter. His three touchdown passes tied a career best as he ran his season total to 21, ranking No. 3 in LSU history.
Jackson, a sophomore from Edgard, La., led a Tiger defense that held Alabama scoreless in the second half in the win over Alabama. He had four tackles, one sack (for a three-yard loss) and batted down two passes in the victory as the Tigers limited Alabama to just 78-yards rushing.
Others receiving votes on offense were McNeese place-kicker Blake Bercegeay of McNeese State and Louisiana-Monroe running back Calvin Dawson. Receiving votes on defense were Trey Bennett of McNeese State and Chaz Williams of Louisiana-Monroe.
