PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — The LSU women’s tennis team completed its fall season on Sunday at the SEC Coaches Classic.
“It was a really good experience for our freshmen to get a taste of the SEC,” LSU assistant coach Lisa Jackson said. “We didn’t get the wins we wanted to, but the girls were fighting hard and we know what we have to work on for the spring season.”
In doubles play, Sophomores Staten Spencer and Mykala Hedberg were forced to withdraw from play on Saturday due to a previous back injury suffered by Spencer.
Freshmen Nicole Kantor and Ashley Murdock drew a bye in the final round of consolation play.
In the “A” flight singles, Hedberg defeated Gira Schofield of South Carolina in the semifinal round of consolation play, 0-6, 7-6(4),6-0. Hedberg was then forced to retire because of a hip flexor injury after losing the first set of the final round to Miami’s Monika Dancevic, 6-1.
In the “B” flight, Kantor fell in the semifinal round to Laura Ganzer of South Carolina, 6-0,3-6,6-2. She then defeated Alabama’s Sofia Ayala in her final round of consolation play, 6-2,6-1.
In the “C” flight, Murdock fell in the semifinal round of consolation play to Melissa Koning of Auburn, 4-6,6-3,6-2. She was then defeated in her final round of consolation play by Auburn’s Jil Hastenrath in straight sets, 6-2,6-3.
In the “D” flight, freshman Sloane Mathis lost the semifinal round of consolation play to Miranda Gutierrez of South Carolina, 6-1,6-0. She then defeated Pauline Bigos of Alabama in her final match, 6-1,6-4.
The Lady Tigers will return to action in one more pre-season tournament at Michigan in January. They will begin regular season play at home on Jan. 21 in a dual match against Southern and Louisiana Tech.
