Women’s Golf Tees Off at Lady Tar Heel

Round 1 delayed until 10 a.m. CT shotgun start due to rain.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The 19th-ranked LSU women’s golf team returns to action for its third start of the fall campaign at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina.

The 54-hole event begins Friday morning and continues through Sunday at the Finley Golf Course at the University.

The tournament has drawn a strong 17-team field and with LSU and host North Carolina in the tournament are: Auburn, College of Charleston, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest.

LSU played its first two tournaments in a seven-day period in mid-September to open the 2006-07 season, finishing fourth in the College of Charleston Cougar Classic and 11th in the Mason Rudolph Championships at Vanderbilt. LSU is averaging 295 a round and Melissa Eaton is averaging 72.5 strokes per round through the first six rounds of the season. Kim Meck is at 74.7.

LSU will go with the same lineup for the third straight event with the senior Eaton twins from South Africa (Melissa and Nicola) being joined by juniors Meck, Rebecca Kuhn and Alexis Rather. Melissa Eaton had the best finish for the Lady Tigers in the two events, taking fourth place in the Cougar Classic.

“This is a very tough field, but it is another good test as we go through the process of working through the little things during the fall semester,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We look forward to another challenge and want to play our best golf and not worry about positioning in the middle of a round.”

The Tigers are playing in the feature pairing of the opening day, leading off the competition at 8 a.m. CST with host North Carolina and South Carolina. Live scoring for the event can be found at www.golfstat.com.

LSU will still have two more tournaments in the fall, including the prestigious Hooter’s Match Play Championships in Orlando in November.
