Soccer’s Jones, Potts Named Second-Team All-SEC

BATON ROUGE — Sophomore forward Roslyn Jones and freshman defender Chelsea Potts have each been named Second-Team All-SEC for the 2006 season as voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches and announced by the conference office Tuesday.

The duo helped lead the LSU soccer team to its first winning season since the 2003 campaign and its most wins in conference play since posting five SEC wins in 2000. Head coach Brian Lee said he is excited about the future of the program with players like Jones and Potts leading the way.

“We feel like we’ve got one of the more talented rosters in the SEC, and it’s nice for the kids to be recognized for the way they played and competed on the field this season,” Lee said. “The future is very bright for this program, and both Roslyn and Chelsea will play a huge role in our success over the next few years.”

Jones finished the season tied for third in the SEC with nine goals and 21 points, while leading the team with six goals and 14 points in 11 conference games. The Mandeville, La., native helped lead LSU’s offensive attack as a forward this season after starting 17 games as an outside right back as a freshman in 2005.

“Roslyn made a smooth transition up top during the spring and proved to be one of the top scoring threats in the SEC this season,” Lee said. “It wasn’t a surprise to us at all because we know what kind of player she is. She is the most coachable player I have ever come across, and we’re excited to have her for two more seasons.”

Potts has lived up to her billing as a Soccer Buzz Top 100 Recruit as she started in all 20 games for the Tigers at center back and is sure to lead a talented LSU back line for the next three years. Lee said he believes Potts is quickly becoming one of the top defenders in the country and is sure to have a great career as an LSU Tiger.

“We feel like Chelsea is one of the top center backs in the country as a freshman and is well on her way to having a tremendous career here in Baton Rouge,” Lee said. “She’s a great person and does everything that is expected of her on and off the field. It’s exciting for me to have the opportunity to coach a player of her caliber over the next few years.”

A total of 15 student-athletes have earned All-SEC recognition in the program’s 12-year history with Jones and Potts now joining this select group of Tigers. This also marks the third straight season that the Tigers have been represented on the All-SEC squad and the fourth time in the last six years with at least two selections.
