Makasini Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU forward Michelle Makasini continues to add to her impressive resume as she has been named SEC Freshman of the Week for a league-leading fourth time this season as announced by the conference office Monday.

Makasini led the Tigers to a 1-0 shutout of Western Division rival Arkansas in their regular-season finale by scoring her team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 78th minute of play after collecting a pass from freshman midfielder Malorie Rutledge and blasting a shot into the back of the net from 10 yards out.

The Euless, Texas, native finished as the second-leading scorer in the SEC with 11 goals and tied the LSU freshman record of 29 points previously set by former Tiger Stacy Bishop in 2003. Makasini also finished the year tied with Felicia Schroeder of South Carolina for the SEC lead with five game-winning goals.

Makasini, who started all 20 matches for the Tigers during the 2006 campaign and proved to be a consistent scoring threat to opposing goalkeepers as she led the SEC with 87 total shots and 39 shots on goal, was also named SEC Freshman of the Week on three occasions during the month of September.
