BATON ROUGE — Garrett Temple spoke with students at Belfair Elementary on Friday in an effort to promote drug-free lifestyles in preparation for the 2006 Red Ribbon Campaign.
Temple spoke with the Pre-K and kindergarten students in a pep rally to promote anti-drug messages and encourage healthy lifestyles. He also spoke about the importance of staying in school.
A sophomore from Baton Rouge, Temple started 35 of 36 games in LSU’s run to the NCAA Final Four last season. He averaged 5.1 points per game, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Known for his defensive prowess, he held Duke All-American J.J. Redick to one of his poorest shooting nights in the Regional semifinals.
Louisiana, in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Justice, the Louisiana State Department of Education, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Louisiana Students Against Destructive Decisions and Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Louisiana, annually celebrates Red Ribbon Week in late October with a number of state officials, educators, citizens, students and law enforcement agents.
The Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign began in 1988 in honor of fallen Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was kidnapped and killed in Mexico in 1985. It encourages families, schools, businesses, law enforcement agencies and service organizations to establish an atmosphere that supports awareness, education and on-going initiatives to prevent illegal drug use and promote healthy living and drug-free lifestyles.
