BATON ROUGE — The LSU Lady Tiger golf team now knows its opponent for the first round of the 2006 Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship scheduled Nov. 3-5 at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
It will be an SEC-ACC matchup for the Lady Tigers as they were assigned the 12th seed for a first-round match with fifth seed Wake Forest. The winner of that match would meet the winner of the match between fourth-seeded Vanderbilt and No. 13 SMU.
The tournament is one of the most unique in college golf in that it features match play with five singles matches determining a team’s fate. The teams were chosen based on national finish a year ago and seeding determined after the teams had taken part in two or three fall events.
“It’s a good draw,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We are looking forward to being back in this event again and it really puts a stamp on our fall schedule.”
The exempt event, run by the National Golf Coaches Association, has Georgia as the number one seed while the 2003 and 2004 Match Play Champion and the 2005 and 2006 national champs are the second seed. Last year’s Match Play champions from Purdue are seeded eighth.
Georgia meets Nebraska in an opening round match, with Duke meeting South Carolina. Other first round matchups find Purdue meeting Arkansas, Auburn against Alabama, Arizona versus Michigan State and Florida State taking on Florida.
LSU still has one more tournament to prepare for before concentrating on the match play format, at the Auburn “Derby” Invitational at Auburn, Ala., Oct. 28-30.
